"The Byron Bay Graminoid Clay Dwarf Heath in the Arakwal National Park, Northern NSW is the subject of my Caldera Art Fellowship project.
The Byron Bay Graminoid Clay Dwarf Heath, is a critically endangered ecological community found only in Byron Bay in Northern NSW. Human impact is the greatest threat to the Byron Bay Heath, the only remaining 2.5 acres are threatened by weed invasion, clearing, erosion and storm water run off from the surrounding developed areas.
The Byron Bay Dwarf Heath is a very pretty open landscape, full of birds. Most of the vegetation is only knee high, so when walking through the heath you can enjoy views across the landscape to the Byron Lighthouse and the ocean.
There are many flowering shrubs and plants throughout the Dwarf Heath, including some threatened species such as the Dwarf Heath Casuarina -Allocasuarina defungens, the Pink nodding orchid - Geodorum densiflorum, and the Byron Bay orchid - Diuris byronensis.
The Byron Bay Dwarf Heath is alive with birds, Wattle birds, lorikeets, honeyeaters and friarbirds are particularly common.
Considering all the flowering plants and birds I have seen in the Byron Bay Heath, I decided to paint a series of decorative paintings, reminiscent of Japanese screen paintings, featuring many flowering plants and birds.
After many hours researching the plant species found in the Heath, I then spent time drawing and taking photographs in the field, returning to the area often to catch different plants in flower.
In addition to the series of Byron Bay Heath paintings, I also created a series of digital artworks (available as limited edition inkjet prints) that each focus on particular delicate flowering plants.
I hope the resulting artworks reflect the beauty and fragility of the Byron Bay Heath, a unique ecological community we are privileged to be able to visit and enjoy."
